PRESENTATION MODES

INTERACTIVE PDF POSTER:
My first mode of presentation will be through three Interactive PDF'S. I feel that the interactivity through the PDF helps to further convey ideas about the proposed design to clients and viewers. It allows for various types of media to be incorporated and played making the client or viewer feel that they are in control of what is happening when they really are not. The interactive PDF will be in a similar layout to that of the Printed Poster.

PRINT POSTER:
My proposed print poster has been designed in a way which will allow the three A1 posters to align next to each other when placed on a board. The information and media on the poster draws the viewers eyes to scan from left to right in a conventional yet sophisticated manner. The first dominant image is of the Structure geometry proudly projecting out from the overhanging cliffs. The use of white space is dominant, as this helps the viewer to see the images and text clearly and in a traditional way - it also allows the images to speak louder.

SHORT FILM IN CRYSIS SANDBOX EDITOR:
For my third and final representation, i have chosen to show the designed structure in the real time environment through the use of the gaming engine crisis wars. A video is compiled showing relevant images and real time video captures of the structure in its environment. The video will speak for it self as it highlights and informs the viewers of the Designed architecture.

The DESIGN

Structural Balance is the main element that has been incorporated throughout my entire design. The structures arbitrary geometry proudly projects out from the cliffs edges spanning out over nothing but thin air. Two dominating mother U beams are cantilevered out of cliff's edge to spanning over a waterfall. These colossal beams support and carry the weight of what seem to be floating floor slabs. Access to the illusionary floating floors is taken through a series of stairs.

There are no walls in this public stretch of space, which further the illusion of the balancing slabs. The lowest floor slab spans out towards the overwhelming and majestic waterfall for a closer interaction. The realization of height is noticed as one steps over the glass floor section, looking down to the river flowing below.

The VANTAGE POINT

A sense of freedom is created, once a leap of faith is taken on the path of the cantilevered Beam. The open space which surrounds overwhelms you as you walk further towards the structure. The ‘Vantage Point’ is captured as the structures low roof, creates a marvellous and engaging vista as it further stresses this sense of freedom by causing the viewer to gaze out over the entire environment. Each floor space is open to all the elements; this was achieved by not placing any sort of obstructing wall on any of the 3 floor slabs. This allows the viewer 360 panoramic views over the entire domain below.

Placed on the edge of a waterfall and cliff, the architecture is a true representation of structural stability and balance. Standing on the edge of any floor the viewer feels as if they are on the balancing point; one step further and they will tip the scales. When on the edge of the floor slabs, the viewer is made to feel as if they are on the perimeter of two words connected through this structure.

BALANCE

In studying Anton Garcia-Abril’s Hemeroscopium house, a key element was balance. Seven main structural elements work together and balance on one another, resulting in the structure being stable. The result is a unique architectural contraption that took over a year’s work in designing and engineering, however only seven days to construct. In my design I incorporated the element of balance through the use of the two cantilevered U-Beam. Each floor is relative to the other in the way that they are supported by these two Beams. The beams allow the floors to seem as if they are hanging on the thin air, creating the illusion that there is no support.

MY|CONCEPT

BALANCE - "A  state of equilibrium or equipoise ; equal distribution of weight or amount..."

Structural Balance is the key element which surrounds my entire design. Two dominating mother U beams, cantilevered out of cliff's edge, spanning over a waterfall to support and carry the weight of the what seem to be floating floor slabs. Access to the illusionary floating slabs is taken through a series of stairs which stand out. There are no walls in this public stretch of space, which further the illusion of the ballancing slabs.

The lowest floor slab spans out towards the overwhelming waterfall for a closer interaction. The realization of hight is noticed once the avatar steps over the glass floor section, looking down to the river flowing below.

VIDEO DOCUMENTING THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE HEMEROSCPOIUM HOUSE

The above video documents the construction process of the Hemeroscopium house. The video is compared to that of a scale model of the house. As a certain element is placed in the Scale model - So to it is placed in the real time environment.

The most amazing thing was that it took little over a year to engineer the building however construciton only took 7 days!

ASSIGNMENT 2 - CHOSEN PIECE OF ARCHITECTURE

HEMEROSCOPIUM HOUSE

Architect: Anton Garcia-Abril from Ensamble Studios

For the Greek, Hemeroscopium is the place where the sun sets. An allusion to a place that exists only in our mind, in our senses, that is ever-changing and mutable, but is nonetheless real. It is delimited by the references of the horizon, by the physical limits, defined by light, and it happens in time.

Hemeroscopium house traps, a domestic space, and a distant horizon. And it does so playing a game with structures placed in anapparently unstable balance, that enclose the living spaces allowing the vision to escape. Heavy structures and big actions are disposed in a way to provoke gravity to move the space. And this way the place is defined.

The order in which these structures are piled up generates a helix that sets out from a stable support, the mother beam, and develops upwards in a sequence of elements that become lighter as the structure grows, closing on a point that culminates the system of equilibrium. Seven elements in total. The design of their joints respond to their constructive nature, to their forces; and their stresses express the structural condition they have. By the way this structure is set, the house becomes aerial, light, transparent, and the space kept inside flows with life. The apparent simplicity of the structure´s joints requires in fact the development of complex calculations, due to the reinforcement, and the prestress and post-tension of the steel rods that sew the web of the beams.

ZAHA HADID POSTER

The above poster achieves various elements one hopes to achieve when designing a poster. It is broken down into a columned grid. Three vertical columns draped from the top to bottom contain different size and styled text Although the above poster is quite informative it does lack some fundamental qualities and aspects - one of these and the most significant of these are the use of images in design.

As noticed there are no images which is rather daring when designing a poster. The layout has been formulated in a way in which to grab the attention of the readers eyes and to lure them in to reading the larger, darker text first. This was achieved well, as the Name of the Architect is written in this font. Once more the sizing and opacity of the text, draws you into reading the centre piece of information which is talking about "open space" and "voids". This has been executed with great success, as the section that mentions voids and open spaces is not cluttered with text or justified in a conventional manner. By doing this it  really highlights the meanings, and conveys a sense of an open area in that section of the Poster.

Overall, I think that the poster has been designed in a terrific method, however with the use of a few images and possibly less text, they designer would be able to attract and interest further the minds of those reading and observing the poster.

DRAFT POSTER GRID

I would like to predominantly convey my design ideas through the use of images. I feel that it is a stronger way to show your designs, whether it be to a client or to any sort of viewers.

This is one prototype that I thought about. The main image on the front shows a dominant view of the structure making the viewer feel as if he is standing in front of the structure viewing it from a perspective. Again the use of images is to be predominantly used  as the main method of displaying my information.

REFLECTION

This project has aided me in being able to view and conceive ideas and processes in a virtual sense. Through the use of Augmented Reality I have been able to understand various methods and avenues that are applicable to the field of architecture. Certain types of virtual influence in the real time environment can, and will, at some point in the near future aid architects/designers or anyone for that matter, in conveying either plans, sections, or any idea they may have, to either a client a board of associates or students.

My chosen architect of inspiration was Zaha Hadid. She is a well know designer of not only various forms of architecture, however she designs furniture also. She is predominantly known for her elegant and delicate use of curves and splines throughout her architecture. What seems impossible to some – is only a dream to her. This has inspired me to imitate that thought pattern, that the abnormal can be considered normal. I decided to create my environment based on the conception of it being ‘a Terminal’ to house my created spore creature who evidently is a bench, designed for seating. In designing the terminal I have constantly referred back to my inspiration in an attempt to discover and understand the meaning, and thought pattern Hadid has put into not only her designs, but also construction.  Through this I have shaped my creations and designs.

One main element of Hadid’s design is that she achieves a terrific relation between her architecture and its surrounding environment. This is something I want to mirror. With some help of my tutor on grasping certain design ideas, I am continuing in the attempt to achieve this through my design and I have faith that it will be achieved.  As far as the project has come I am happy with my achieved design yet the road to perfection has many bends and unseen detours, however I am determined to get there.

MARKERS & FINAL ENVIRONMENT
The following are markers of my own design. I propose to use them in relation to my Augmented Reality project and project certain faces of my architecture and environment through the use of these markers. I decided to stay close to the basic lettering of each individual view, in which the marker would project the image (ie Front - 'F' or Section 'S') I thought that this method would be understood and easily recognized by those viewing my cube.

The 'TERMINAL' in AUGMENTED REALITY
(first draft)

Environment 2

ENVIRONMENT 2

The terminal allows access from the front entrance of the structure, and maintains a sense of free space as it hollows through the rear connecting the landform from front to back.

Above is my second planed representation of a station or terminal my creature will decided to call its abode. The various lines forming the structure are an interpretation of my main inspirational architect 'Zaha Hadid'. One concept was that the terminal could act as a parking terminal next to an aeroplane runway (shown in images above)

Augmented reality inspiration Video

This video highlights the range of possibilities that Augmented Reality will allow its users to achieve. I too searched and downloaded an app of Augmented Reality for my iphone 4 which aided me to find various dinning restaurants, cinemas, bars, hospitals and parks just to name a few... all within a 20 mile radius. This technology will open doors for a variety of uses in the near future.

I found this video to be rather impressive in the fact that, this is where our future is heading. Augmented Reality (AR) is going to be used in our daily lives in the very near future. We may also use it to aid us in the field of architecture as it will allow a more intimate relationship between those viewing either a plan or idea of a future house they might be building. 0:39 in the video above shows amazing things, that we are working towards achieving and this will be achieved through the use of AR.
